Product Description
The Black Diamond Rocklock Screwgate carabiner is one of Black Diamond's largest locking biners. The new Keylock has a non-snagging keylock nose. A slightly curved spine maximizes the gate opening and a square hinge end holds your belay loop securely in place. The Rocklock's large size makes it an excellent choice when using two ropes, wearing gloves, or when using a variety of belaying and repelling techniques. Its large capacity can handle multiple clove hitches at belays. It's easily operated with one hand. Vendor

5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Carabiner...   March 9, 2009

I use both this model and a RockLock Twistlock model currently. I really like them both, and although I end up using the Twistlock more often, that's in no way due to any problems I've ever had with this Screwgate. It's just that the two designs are useful for different reasons.

The Screwgate is better suited for one-handed operation. Once the lock has been twisted into the unlocked position, it stays there. The gate can then open and close freely, until you decide to twist the locking mechanism back into the locked position. It takes two fingers to lock/unlock, and then your hands are free to manipulate the gate, items attached to the biner, etc. The downside to this approach is that since the locked and unlocked positions are not drastically different visually, it is relatively easy to forget to lock the biner.

On the other hand, the Twistlock model locks automatically because the locking mechanism is spring-loaded. You twist to unlock, while opening the gate at the same time. Releasing the locking mechanism while the gate is open forces the gate to stay open. It is nearly impossible to inadvertently leave a Twistlock in an unsecured position. But there's a downside to this, too. The locking mechanism on the gate has to be manipulated EVERY TIME you open or close the gate. There is no way to leave it unlocked.

I'd definitely recommend this biner. It's strong, really well built, and feels like it's going to last forever. Personally, as I've said, I usually end up using the Twistlock model. But it's a matter of preference, and certainly not due to any design or manufacturing flaws. As such, it's easily worth a 5-star rating to me.

5 out of 5 stars Great biner---lock makes it really safe   October 7, 2008

This was the first biner I bought as my belay biner. I really like the auto-self locking twist mechanism because I take a lot of new people climbing so this helps avoid forgetting to lock the biner. Black diamond makes a great product. I recommend it to anyone climbing or repelling.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Belay Carabiner   March 9, 2009
Jeff Kraus (Orlando, FL USA)
I use both this model and a RockLock Screwgate model currently. I really like the Twistlock because, as was stated in the previous review, it's impossible to forget to lock it. You can't close the gate without locking it -- closing the gate requires a 1/2 twist on the locking mechanism, which is spring-loaded. So when you close the gate, releasing the locking mechanism causes it to spring back into the locked position.

There is a downside to this. Since the biner, when closed, is always in the locked position, it can be a little bit more difficult to handle than the Screwgate in certain circumstances. The Screwgate locking mechanism can maintain its unlocked position, so a one-handed twist of the lock will then free up both hands to manipulate the biner and whatever it is attached to. With this Twistlock model, one hand must be holding the lock in the open position or else it will lock again. It's a relatively minor distinction for my needs, and at any rate it's not a design flaw, just a design difference.

I'd definitely recommend this biner, especially for those who may be worried about possibly forgetting to lock a Screwgate model. Personally, I use it as my full-time belay carabiner now, and the Screwgate has been relegated to locking the chalk bag to my harness.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!   October 18, 2009

I love this carabiner. It's so convenient that you don't have to twist the lock every time you want to lock it. It's also a great size so it fits all my gear with room to spare.
